CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2010 continues to adhere to the unique four-tier process of selection, where the IBN18 Editorial draws the list of nominees, the Jury ratifies the list followed by voting by the Electoral College along with Citizens of India. The unique feature of the selection process is that the ‘CNN-IBN Indian of the Year’ is not chosen only basis “popular” votes, but has to get Electoral college votes as well, and is ratified by the Editorial Board and the Jury.

The steps involved in the four-tier process include

  1. Tier – 1: The IBN18 Editorial Board draws the list of Nominees
    The IBN18 Editorial board including Raghav Bahl (Managing Director TV18), Rajdeep Sardesai (Editor-in-Chief, IBN18 Network), Ashutosh (Editor IBN7), Nikhil Wagle (Editor IBN-Lokmat), in consultation with Editorial board of Hindustan Times, draw the list of nominees.
  2. Tier – 2: ‘The Jury’ ratifies the list of Nominees
    The Jury, constituting of eminent Indians who are all recipients of India’s highest state honours like Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri ratify the final list of nominees for each category. The Jury comprises of Mr. Soli Sorabjee (Chairman of the Jury), Mr. Ramachandra Guha, Mr. Deepak Parekh, Ms. Shobhana Bhartia, Mr. Mohanlal V. Nair and Mr. Geet Sethi.
  3. Tier – 3: The Electoral College Votes
    The Electoral College constitutes over 150 eminent Indian citizens who are extraordinary performers in their own fields and are primarily the intelligentsia of the country. The Electoral College includes names like Lord Meghnad Desai, Sunil Gavaskar, Javagal Srinath Nafisa Ali, Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid, Kris Srikkanth, Chanda Kochhar, Arvind Kejriwal, Jyotiraditya scindia,Amar Singh, Abhishek Manu Singhvi etc.
  4. Tier – 4: The Citizens Vote
    The fourth tier in this whole process is the Vox Populi – i.e. people are encouraged to cast their vote through two available mechanisms:
